Banana Cake by Omaha Steaks

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

I’ll be honest - I don’t order a lot of food from Omaha Steaks.  Everything I’ve ever ordered from them was exceptionally delicious, but also relatively expensive.  I’m too much of a cheapskate to buy frequently.

This Banana Cake is definitely on my list for next time, though.  At a relatively reasonable $19.99, you get almost two pounds of carb-laden goodness.  If you eat the whole thing, you may need to install some flattering Hinkley lighting to hide the extra pounds you gain…

Country Living Farmhouse Pie Baker’s Kit

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

I absolutely love baking pies, but the effort involved means that I don’t get to do it very often.  I have time for grocery store pies, but it’s tough to carve out hours for homemade crusts and fillings.  This Country Living Farmhouse Kitchen Pie Baker’s Kit is a nice compromise - you get everything you need to bake a good pecan pie, without having to resort to a frozen brick of pie from the grocery store.

Of you could just buy air tools, but you can’t eat those.

Gluten Free Muffins & Breakfast Products

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

I have a friend whose younger cousin requires a gluten-free diet, and she was recently in charge of babysitting the child for the weekend.  For those of you following along, that’s a minimum of about 6 meals over the course of 2 full days.  She was understandably nervous, and decided she would just feed the child large bowls of corn.  Because that’s a balanced meal, right?

Fortunately, I talked her into doing a little research online and she came across a few delicious-sounding gluten-free products.  Because breakfast was the hardest for her (think of all the wheat most of us eat at breakfast), I’m posting some of the gluten-free breakfast finds below:

ANDI - Bar - Blueberry Muffin
ANDI - Bar - Blueberry Muffin
Price: $2.79
These might be intended for special diets, but anything with the phrase “blueberry muffin” catches my eye.  It’s also quite healthy, with stuff like calcium, vitamin D, and flax.

Glutino - Premium English Muffins
Glutino - Premium English Muffins
Price: $6.37
I didn’t even know this was possible.  If anything would have to contain gluten, I’d think it would be muffins.  I guess not, though!

Really Great Food - Apple Spice Muffin Mix
Really Great Food - Apple Spice Muffin Mix
Price: $5.35
Again, this one sounds delicious even for those of us on a normal diet.  I could easily see this being a favorite in mixed-diet households.

In the end, the weekend went great and my friend’s cousin ended up feeling super special to know that her older cousin had done all that research just for her.  I think she liked it even better than if she had come over to find a whole house full of toys.

Which, of course, brings me to another point - food is more than just sustenance.  By carefully choosing,  preparing, or gifting food to friends and loved ones, you’re also sending the message that you care deeply.  There’s no reason we can’t all do little things like this from time to time.  Even if large gift sets aren’t in your budget, cook dinner for your friends or pick up your significant other’s favorite candy bar next time you’re in line at the checkout - the message is still the same.

Delicious Thank You Pastel Cupcakes, Delivered

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

There are few mail-order food companies that I love more than Mrs. Beasley’s. Every month or so, I’ll place an order with them and find a delicious package at my doorstep. I’ve purchased their cupcakes for several friends and relatives and they’ve all been crazy about them. Between the creamy icing and the soft, fluffy cake, they’re absolutely heavenly.

These Mrs. Beasleys Thank You Cupcakes are available for delivery in sets of 12 or 6 - The six pack is less than $30! Did your boss give you a raise? Send him cupcakes. Did your husband take you out for a romantic evening? Have cupcakes delivered. Did your kid’s baseball coach lead them to victory? Obviously, cupcakes are in order. They’re much tastier than baseball trophies.

David’s Cookies Key Lime Tart with Raspberry & Mango Sauce

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

Even if you’re not a fan of lime, you’ll probably like these Key Lime Tarts from David’s Cookies.  It comes in a butter cookie shell and the filling itself is thick and rich.  The tart weighs in at more than 1 pound, which is pretty amazing considering how thin tarts are usually made.  Due to the richness, the Key Lime Tart feeds 12.

Chocolate Ecstasy Cake - For a Birthday, Anniversary, Mother’s Day, Tuesday…

Friday, April 25th, 2008

When it comes to gifts, I have a personal motto: “Always err on the side of delicious.” Given the choice between a fantastic edible gift and something you can’t eat, I’m almost always going to get the gift you can eat. People always stare at delicious food in bakeries and stores, but it’s not often that they treat themselves to a $20+ food that serves no practical purpose (though I’d argue for mood enhancement).

This Chocolate Ecstasy Cake is just one more example of an incredible gift cake that most people would never otherwise taste. It weighs in at **5 POUNDS** of fudge-y, chocolate-y goodness.  The entire surface of the cake is covered in fudge frosting, chocolate wafers, some kind of extra icing, and crushed chocolate or cookies (or chocolate cookies) all over the sides.  By the time you’re done, you’ll be so full and uncomfortable that you’ll need a sleep wedge to get a peaceful rest.

Let Her Eat Cake - The Best Mother’s Day Cakes

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Mother’s Day is one of those holidays that always seems to sneak up on me. This year, though, I’m going to be prepared. By compiling a list of the best cake choices for Mother’s Day, I’m getting a head start on looking for a gift. I don’t know if I’ll buy a Mother’s Day cake or not, but these certainly do look delicious…

Chocolate Saucy Cakes (6 pieces)
Chocolate Saucy Cakes (6 pieces)
If you’re having a Mother’s Day dinner, these cakes are the perfect dessert. Instead of spending hours in the kitchen, you can move them from the freezer to the microwave and have them ready to eat in just a couple of minutes. Diameter: 3.5″ each Weight: 1 lb, 9.5 oz. Serves: 6

Miss Grace Lemon Cake, 20 - 24 Servings
Miss Grace Lemon Bundt Cake
Price: $46.9
Each of these delicious lemon bundt cakes is handmade using fresh-squeezed California lemons, fresh-grated zest and fresh eggs, and Mrs. Beasley’s secret lemon glaze to give it the moist and delicious taste that has made it a true sensation. Each lemon cake comes in the classic Miss Grace decorator tin.  This is the perfect cake for a light afternoon meal on Mother’s Day.

White Chocolate Lace Cake - 10
White Chocolate Lace Cake
If this cake is 1/10 as delicious as it looks, this gift will cause your mother to secretly declare you her favorite this Mother’s Day.  It starts with a white cake layered with raspberry preserves, covered with white chocolate butter cream, and then layered with more white chocolate butter cream. The cake is then topped with raspberry glaze and the white spiral design you see above. Diameter: 10″ Weight: 64 oz. Serves: 16

12 Pc. Assorted Brownie & Crumb Cake Sampler
12 Pc. Assorted Brownie & Crumb Cake Sampler
I’ve never been disappointed by a gift from David’s, and this 12pc Brownie Crumb Cake Sampler is not likely to be an exception!  The reusable David’s gift tin will come filled with: (8) amazing 4 oz. brownies in Chocolate Chip, Pecan Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter, Blondie, Cheesecake, Rocky Road and Macaroon. (4) 6 oz. crumb cake slices in flavors like Original Butter, Triple Chocolate, and Raspberry.

Any other favorites I’m forgetting?  After these Mother’s Day gifts, your mom may be ready for an Orovo detox - or just a run around the block.

A Barack Obama Cookie Cake?

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

This may be the strangest cookie cake I’ve ever encountered - The Barack Obama Cookie Cake. I’m not sure why anyone outside of his campaign would want a cake bearing his name, but I guess someone over at David’s Cookies thought there was a demand for it.

The $34.95 cookie cake itself weighs in at 1.5 pounds and has a 12 inch diameter. If you put one of these away, you’d probably have to chase it with something like Orovo for all the calories you’d have just taken in. Of course, if you’re having a party to celebrate the events of the election, this would be the perfect refreshment. I’ve never eaten a bad cookie from David’s Cookies.

The Famous Mrs. Beasley’s Make Your Own Cupcake Set

Friday, April 4th, 2008

Mrs. Beasley’s cupcakes are well-known as a favorite of the stars (though I’m not sure if anyone in Hollywood actually digests them…), but their mail-order business ensures that her delicious baked goods can be delivered to anywhere from Los Angeles to remote Branson lots and anywhere in between.

As I was browsing their site, I had initially planned to order some cupcakes to arrive for a relative’s birthday. Then I realized that they have this totally awesome Mrs. Beasley’s Decorate Your Own Cupcake Kit.

The cupcake kit comes with 18 100 calorie popper cupcakes, 4 colossal cupcakes, 2 tubs of frosting, pastry bags, and *9* different toppings. And it’s only $40. Not bad at all.

Raspberry Swirl Cheesecake by Junior’s New York

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

If you’re a fan of cheesecake, you know that there’s more to good cheesecake than just The Cheesecake Factory. Junior’s New York makes some amazing cheesecakes that you can even get delivered. Their Raspberry Swirl Cheesecake is a great blend of regular cheesecake and a gooey raspberry puree.

At 3 pounds for a single cheesecake, you’ll have plenty for 10-12 people. They also have regular cheesecake, sugar-free cheesecake, chocolate mousse, chocolate swirl, fruity cheesecake, and a sampler that includes several flavors. The only way they could make it better is to enhance the health factor with something like vitamins or Astragalus.

Omaha Steaks…Dark Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough?

Monday, February 18th, 2008

When you hear “Omaha Steaks”, most people understandably turn their thoughts to steak.  Luckily, though, they have an entire array of delicious products beyond the steaks they’re famous for.  For $24.99, you can get 30 ready-to-bake Dark Chocolate Cookie Dough portions.

Even better, it looks like the package is on sale right now for a mere $9.99. This post is made possible by an informative website on cerebral palsy symptoms.

Coconut Layer Cake

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Coconut cakes are one of those things that can either be very, very good or very, very bad. A good coconut cake is soft and mild, with only a slightly disruption in texture from the coconut flakes (unless they’re toasted, of course). A bad one is like eating a cake covered in fingernail clippings - not at all pleasant.

While I’ve definitely suffered through my fair share of bad coconut cakes (and pies, and cookies), I doubt that Macy’s would have made a mistake like that with their Coconut Layer Cake. They describe it as, “Caught in a snowstorm of soft coconut flakes, this cake offers a light treat with tons of taste. Beneath the coconut you’ll find an airy vanilla chiffon cake filled with delectable butter cream.”  That sounds a lot better than some of the coconut cakes I’ve had in the past where the coconut flakes had the consistency of fiber optic cables.

What coconut lover wouldn’t want that?

Valentine’s Day Gifts from…Wal-mart?

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

It would be great if everyone could buy Valentine’s Day gifts like diamonds and cars and Folly Beach real estate, but most people have some kind of budget in mind. While doing a little shopping today, I noticed that even Wal-Mart has some nice, affordable Valentine’s Day gift items. Take a look:

Cookie Play Dough

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Seeing this Cookie Play Dough reminds me of a cousin that I spent a lot of time raising as a child. Her mother was a young single mom, so she spent most of her time at work, school, or out dating and trying to meet a quality man (for the record, she finally did). Anyway, that left many thousands of hours (and diapers) for me. Many of those hours were spent making sure that she didn’t eat things like paste and play dough, so these cookies would have been beyond perfect for her back in those days.

Today, she’s more into boys than eating play dough, but I suspect she’d still enjoy making cookies out of this play dough-like dough. I thought about sending her some, but with my luck, she’d do something awful like create anatomically correct cookie men and the moment would be ruined. I’m not ready to see my teenage cousin doing things like that, so I’ll probably wait for her 21st birthday instead. I’m still a little scarred by the time the picked up a piece of my boyfriend’s stray Cat 5 cable and cracked it like a whip. I’m pretty sure I wasn’t that dirty at 16.

Valentine’s Day Heart-Shaped Cookies

Thursday, January 10th, 2008 Food and Candy Gifts

These Heart Cookies make another great entry to the Valentine’s Day gift list. Half the cookies are chocolate, and half of the cookies are vanilla. They start as small as 2 oz. for $6, so these cookies will truly fit any budget. If you can’t spend a fortune but you still want a cute, pre-made gift, you should definitely check these out. You’ll do much better than if you tried to gift something like socks or an auto insurance quote (which obviously shows concern, but it’s not what I’d call romantic).

And if you want to spend more, they have larger packages, too. Obviously. :)

The Brownie Sampler

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 Food and Candy Gifts

I can’t say that I’ve ever had (or even heard of) apricot almond crumb brownies, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to. Cheryl & Co’s Signature Brownie Bow Box includes that flavor and then some: fudge, blondie, raspberry crumb, chocolate chocolate fudge, oatmeal scotchie, toffee crunch, caramel fudge, zebra, and cashew chocolate chip, to be precise.

In my mind, this is one of those cases where it is not only acceptable to buy pre-made, but advisable. Can you imagine how long it would take to make all of those brownie flavors? It would be a nightmare.

Mrs. Fields Cookie Cake - With or Without Nuts

Thursday, December 20th, 2007 Food and Candy Gifts

Even without the mention of “real butter, whole eggs, and pure vanilla”, I was ready to dive into the Happy Holidays Big Cookie Cake from Mrs. Fields. at $34.99, they’re not exactly cheap, but they’re not unreasonable, either. The 12″ decorated cookies cakes would be perfect for a party or even to eat alone if you’re particularly ambitious. Not that I’d know anything about eating entire cookie cakes alone…yeah, I might as well move in the cat furniture now.

The cookie cakes also come in flavors like peanut butter, triple chocolate, and white chocolate and macadamias.

Mrs. Fields Classic Gift Sets

Saturday, December 15th, 2007 Food and Candy Gifts

I know a divorced single mother who gets depressed once in a while and eats so much junk food that she has to get out her old maternity clothes to feel comfortable. As sick as that sounds, I understand where she’s coming from when I see these Mrs. Fields® Classic Gift Baskets. Their brownie sets are consistently soft and moist, whether I’ve purchased them online or in the stores. Of course, I prefer to buy them in person, since that way I only purchase one :)

Carrot Cake

Saturday, December 15th, 2007 Food and Candy Gifts

As strange as some people may think it is, I love Carrot Cake. OF course, I think it’s strange that my boyfriend gets exciting about things like HDMI switches, so I guess it just depends on your tastes. From the carrot cake’s cream cheese icing to the complex texture to the slight but not overpowering sweetness of the cake…they’re just awesome. I could seriously see myself ordering one of the cakes below and eating the entire thing in one sitting.
